Our kids' binders, by and large, are gross. Have students do weekly binder checks this month in their squads, identify what materials your kids might need, and have them grade one another using the AVID Binder check sheets in your binders.
Consider having students lay out their binders, pictured, and play "musical checks"- where students circulate until the music stops, and grade the binder in front of them.
Here are some silly, stupid, goofy, and definitely catchy AVID BINDER Check songs to play while they are organizing :)
Help students filter out what they NO LONGER NEED! Was it an assignment from 1st quarter that never got completed? A syllabus? Bathroom passes that have expired? Three copies of the same rubric? Take the time to review what goes, what stays, and what needs to be ironed and refiiled!
As a school we are struggling to review notes with students, helping them reengage with the information, and ask deeper questions of the material to better understand it. Please review the purpose of Cornell Notes with students, and practice taking these notes with an article from this month, or any one of their classes.
We all have these lovely papers on our walls, but do our students actually know what these letters represent? Test their knowledge, and have each student pick a word to focus on each week in January, and even discuss how they will practice their skill.
Avid students will be supporting your HC this month to help teach discussions, note taking, and binder checking! Look out for emails to facilitate their interactions with your students, or even better, request an AVID student to teach a skill you're wanting to explore with your class.
This song definitely surprised me! A young man with an awesome singing voice will hopefully inspire our kiddos to SLANT... finally!
