Extended Empathy

Dr. King's Vocabulary Lesson

Engage with the Civil Rights movement through an interactive vocabulary lesson.  Implement GLAD strategies with pictures, videos, and examples of words regarding racism, integration, segregation, and more.
Vocabulary

Write a letter.

Practice empathy by putting yourself in another person's shoes- a soldier, or a child in the hospital, or even a celebrity or world leader.  What must their life and experiences really be like?  Write letters to connect with what they are enduring, and even take the step to mail them!
Send the letters

Take a walk...

Whether next door or down the road, connect your HC with a group of people they don't interact with on a regular basis.  Prep the students with questions and conversation starts to interact with and empathize with either an Elementary school class, or older folks at a retirement home.  A perfect mini-field trip, the students can practice empathy and meet new people.  Remember to have students fill out field trip forms if heading off campus.  Where should you visit?  Look here! - Scroll to the bottom of the page, or read it all and write some letters too!

Before you go, prep your students with questions to ask and how to use empathetic language-  including possibly speaking slower and/or louder than normal...

The Perfect 7th or 8th Extended HC video...

This 45:00 video will fly over most 6th graders heads, and is similar to the Roman video on the 8th grade video page, so don't watch this also, but rather, follow along as he shares the key to empathy with Google employees.

Built in to this video are questions he challenges employees with, that you may pause the video for and have the students answer as well.  It really is phenomenal, practical, and interesting!
